on the Ultima cutter thanks to the Ultima’s integrated EPOS®
electronic positioning technology. Unlike other manufacturers
offering combined print & cut solutions, we chose for a
different approach, i.e. establishing the link between two
separate units. Users first of all have two machines, which
they are able to use full-time, for printing and (contour)
cutting, offering a higher productivity compared to combined

"Moreover, potential users should be aware of the intrinsic
limitations of combined print and cut machines loaded with
solvent-based inks. Solvent-based inks need to stabilize 24 to
48 hours before cutting. This is due to the chemical
interaction between the PVC and the solvents, causing a
temporary media shrinkage, which is balanced after evaporation
of all solvents. If the solvents have not evaporated fully
before cutting, stickers might curl due to tension in the
media. Ink which is still wet could also be scratched when
cutting shortly after printing. Therefore, the
user-friendliness of hybrid print and cut systems in
combination with solvent-based inks actually disappears" says
Vanhoutte.
